Dawn Farm Spera Recovery Center
Spera is a special place—a safe and
welcoming entry to recovery. People come
to this unique house on Huron Street
feeling lost and hopeless—and find a new
way of life.
In 1973, Dawn Farm’s founders visited some recovering addicts in a treatment program in northern Quebec. Their ideas informed the founding of Dawn Farm. The program was called Spera.
Spera is Latin for “hope,” and hope is a big part of Dawn Farm’s culture. The Spera Recovery Center pays homage to our friends from Quebec—and endorses the hope that we believe is essential to recovery.
Our Detox facility provides a safe environment for alcoholics and drug addicts who want to safely with-draw from drugs and alcohol. Detox is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Thousands of men and women have found a new life in this program.
However, continued demand forced us to turn away more than a 1000 people each year. We began discussions with local hospitals and other area providers, and the Spera Recovery Center
was developed, offering beds for outreach services in addition to detoxification.
This program increases capacity from 13 to 18 beds, meeting community needs with relatively low additional costs. Spera will care for as many as 1600 men and women each year.
- Spera’s Detox is similar to the previous program but allows for additional medical support. Medical students and staff will participate on the Detox treatment team.
- Outreach beds will be available for individuals who need case management or who are waiting for additional treatment or housing.
- Beds will be available for individuals who are ambivalent about recovery but are willing to visit and abide by our basic behavioral expectations.
We believe it is important that these outreaches be housed together in an integrated center. The success of a program for ambivalent people depends heavily on an environment infused with hope and recovery. Continuous exposure to recovering people and their success stories is critical.
The Spera Recovery Center offers an array of supports and opportunities—a community meeting space, links with community providers and Outpatient Services just down the street—a truly comprehensive service region. Combined with Dawn Farm’s other programs (residential services, transitional housing and outreaches), Spera offers a true continuum of care—and tangible hope to those who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction.
