Grief and Loss in Addiction and Recovery

This program will describe Worden’s and Kubler-Ross’ theories of grief and grief recovery, losses that the chemically dependent individual and his/her family experience throughout the addiction and recovery processes, and how recovery program tools can help individuals cope with grief and loss.

About the presenter:

Janice Firn, LMSW
Clinical Social Worker – Supervision Lead
Department of Social Work
University of Michigan Hospital

Janice earned a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2004 and a Bachelor of Science in Family Community Services from Michigan State University in 2001. She completed her graduate school internship at Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan and worked as an outpatient social worker in Radiation Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit, Michigan for several years. Currently, she is an inpatient Clinical Social Worker at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, working with hematology-oncology patients and families. Her interest areas include counseling, oncology, bereavement, human growth and development across the lifespan, self-identity formation/actualization, substance abuse and recovery, and end-of-life care issues.

Matt Statman, LLMSW, CADC
Dawn Farm therapist and Education Series Coordinator

Matt has been a Dawn Farm employee since 2004. Matt started with Dawn Farm as a Transitional House Manager, which he did for almost three years. He was the Team Leader at Dawn Farm Detox from 2006 until August 2008. From August 2008 until June 2009 Matt worked part time as a Detox Counselor while attending school full time. He got his BSW from Eastern Michigan University in 2009 and then worked part time as a resident aid while attending the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Matt completed his MSW in August 2010 and is now working as a Residential Therapist at Dawn Farm Downtown. He also works at Dawn Farm Outpatient, where he runs groups in the Washtenaw County Jail, at Community Corrections and for clients of the Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Initiative.
