Volunteer of the Month

Rory Crook is the volunteer of the month. He has been preparing dinner on Monday nights for over 3 years. He loves to joke around in the kitchen and brings laughter to detox. He always brings several of his sponsee's or men he supports to help him cook. Rory is an excellent role model for the male clients in detox. He readily shares his experience, strength, and hope with the clients and has been able to reach some of the hardest cases. Volunteers like Rory bring recovery to detox and help us achieve our mission.

Ed Series Update

We are sorry that we had to postpone the Intervention workshop by Jeff and Debra Jay that was scheduled for February 19, 2008. We will let everyone know when this program is rescheduled.

Dawn Farm will present the following free Education Series programs in March 2008:

"Addiction and Spirituality" will be presented on March 18, 2008; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, by Ed Conlin, BSEd, CAC-2; addiction counselor, Jefferson House (and former Team Leader at Detox.) This presentation will explore the core of our spiritual needs, address our own life choices, examine the spirituality of the 12 Steps, and discuss how the 12 Steps can help anyone, whether recovering from chemical dependency or not chemically dependent.

"Grief and Loss in Addiction" will be presented on March 25, 2008; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, by Janice Firn, LMSW; Clinical Social Worker, University of Michigan Hospital; and Veronica Smith, LMSW; Therapist, Dawn Farm Daybreak Program. This presentation will provide a basic study of how addiction produces grief and loss for the individual and the family, and on recovery from grief and loss.

All Education Series programs are presented in the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Education Center auditorium, 5305 Elliott Drive, Ypsilanti. All programs are free and open to all; presentations are intended to have broad appeal and are geared toward a diverse audience. No registration is required. Each workshop is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) to provide 1.5 free CE hours. All staff are invited to attend, and we will be grateful for your help in informing clients, families and others!!

The full Education Series schedule along with details, directions and a flier can be accessed from http://www.dawnfarm.org/edseries.html. You can also contact me by e-mail or by phone at Detox with questions.

The "Teens Using Drugs: What To Know and What To Do" ongoing two-part workshop series will be presented by our friend Ron Harrison on March 4 (part 1, "What To Know") and March 11 (part two, "What To Do.") For information about this series, please see http://www.teensusingdrugs.org. (Please note that MCBAP CE is not provided for this program.)

Thank you,

Matt Statman was invited by Martin Bandyke to be interviewed about the Dawn Farm Education Series , on Thursday February 14 at 9:00 am, on radio station WQKL, Ann Arbor's 107.1.

Employee of the Month

Elsa Duckworth has been a Detox Counselor since 5/04. Since that time, she has worked the midnight shift, evening shift, week-end shift, and recently, the day shift. Elsa brings a positive attitude to the job, both to staff and clients. Detox can count on Elsa to talk to the "most resistant clients" with an understanding mind and welcoming heart. She often steps up when Detox is short on staff, and with little notice given to her. She undertakes special projects with no complaints and does them quickly. Thanks for being part of the Team at Detox, Elsa!

Confidentiality reminder

In the last few months some of our staff have dealt with tricky situations related to confidentiality. Maintenance of confidentiality is vital to our organization. It is important to note that there are a few exceptions to the general principle of confidentiality. One of those exceptions involves cases of medical emergencies. Necessary and relevant information may be released to medical personnel if it is needed in a medical emergency. For example, medical personnel may request a client's medical history, drug of choice, current medications, and/or medication log. Also, the first responder to a medical 911 call may be a police officer. If this is the case, give the officer immediate access to the client and provide the officer with any information that he or she needs to provide care to the client.

Looking back, looking ahead

I posted this just before the holidays and the response was a little anemic. Now that the holidays are over, I'm asking for your help again.

I created another wiki page to get your thoughts about what we accomplished in 2007 and what you might like to see us do in 2008.

Please visit this page and add your thoughts.

CTK

We're looking at overhauling CTK in 2008. Some of the planned improvements will make it much easier to sort through clients with multiple admissions. Documents within an admission will also be much more organized.

I'd like your input about how you think CTK should work. Send your feedback to me.
