Alcoholics Anonymous: A Panel Discussion

This program will present a short slide show and discussion of the history of Alcoholics Anonymous followed by a lively moderated panel discussion regarding addiction and alcoholism, personal recovery, and participation in 12 Step programs. The Doctor's Opinion on Alcoholism

This program will describe a physician's view of alcoholism, as presented in the literature of Alcoholics Anonymous and updated with the modern neurobiology of addictive illness. It will include a discussion of Dr. Silkworth’s explanation of alcoholism as a twofold disease affecting mind and body, how Dr. Silkworth's opinion relates to the modern neurobiology of addictive illness, identification of therapy for alcoholism as promoted by Alcoholics Anonymous, and the relationship of this therapy to Dr. Silkworth’s opinion.

Suicide and Recovery From Addiction
will be presented on Tuesday November 30, 2010 ; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

This program will teach participants to be alert to the signs of suicidal thinking among individuals in recovery. It will help participants learn to recognize the signs of suicidal thinking, learn how to reach out and offer support, know how to reach out and ask for help when suicidal thoughts are present, and be aware of local and national suicide prevention/intervention resources and how to access resources.

Trauma and Chemical Use and Addiction

Current research highlights the relationship between chemical use, addiction and trauma. This presentation will review events involved with trauma exposure, trauma specific symptomology, the impact trauma has on the brain and on coping and subsequent substance use, and how to aid individuals struggling with trauma and addiction.

Chemical Dependency and the Family

Chemical dependency is a family condition. The Intersection of Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse
will be presented on Tuesday February 15, 2011; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Domestic violence offender and survivor alcohol and other drug use/abuse will be central to this discussion. The audience will be provided with a primmer regarding batterer tactics, strategies, and core beliefs which hold the batterer accountable for his abusive behaviors while maintaining and promoting survivor safety. The program will help participants to recognize the critical importance of understanding domestic violence and alcohol/other drug use/abuse in order to safely and effectively intervene and/or interrupt the batterer's abusive behaviors.

It's been said that the doctor’s office is a dangerous place for people in recovery. It's also been said that recovering people are terrible patients. This program will discuss whether these statements are fair and why doctors and other healthcare providers are essential allies for long term recovery. We will describe in detail how recovering people can take responsibility for their physical health and how to recruit your health care providers as allies.

Eating Disorders

This program will examine the evidence that eating disorders are true biopsychosocial diseases, similar to chemical dependency. The program will define various eating disorders and their consequences, explore neurobiological theories of addiction, describe physiological consequences of eating disorders, discuss screening tools, and provide information on treatment options and resources for eating disorders.
